I'd like to propose the following way of helping each other learn. A learner could write a free-form essay in the chosen language X and post it here on the forum. Other learners for whom X is the native language will then read the essay, point out shortcomings, and suggest ways to improve.

What do you think? I'll gladly volunteer to be a critic for Russian. I think this is in a way better than language exchange, because it won't require pairs of people with matching pairs of languages.

The one potential obstacle that I see is the language of this forum. Maybe we should open language-specific topics on the forum with headings in that language, rather than English.

I support this idea. It could be useful.

But I have hesitation about its attractiveness for people who will do the checking. I think people come to some site (e.g. here) to solve their problems and satisfy their needs. If just to put an essay as topic it could happen that nobody even read it. It could be boring. And it is boring even more b/c the checking person should read carefully and emphasize the mistakes.

This process can be interesting if to make it as a game. Or we should find another way how to attract the bees to honey.

Again I think that the idea itself is valuable. It needs further development.

Introscop, please share your thoughts about it if you have any in future.

Yes, I think this idea has a potential.

Introscop, please don't hesitate to open any new language specific topic related to essay writing, you might also seed it with your own essay first Smiley

If you think that Essays need a separate forum or a category - please let me know, I will create it.

Askhat: There's all kinds of people out there. Finding faults in others can be a fun activity for some people. (including myself)

Misha: I would like to write an essay. Give me a few days. As far as structurizing it, let me think about that too.

Mmh, I think the important point is to structure the Essays in different kind of specific language topics. So if people who are capable to translate easily find the right corner. I've good experience with that in latin on www.e-latein.de, where you can post something in a translation-section and a few time later there is a response. This is only dependent on how many people visit the forum
